A training team made up of staff and instructors from the Defence Cyber Academy (DCA), supported by colleagues from UK Strategic Command’s Cyber Advisory Team Reserves, and the local Defence Attaché, have presented a strategic cyber awareness seminar in Malaysia.
DCA, part of the Defence College for Military Capability Integration, delivered the seminar to the Five Powers Defence Arrangement (FPDA), at their operational headquarters (HQ Integrated Area Defence Systems (HQIADS)) - RMAF Butterworth in Penang.
The two-day programme included:
- presentations on:
- cyber concepts and operations
- cyber mission assurance
- attack recovery planning
- possible challenges of the future
- opportunities for connecting, collaborating and sharing experiences with peers
- a popular table-top exercise, the Cyber Board Game, which invites participants to plan and co-ordinate a cyber-attack on a fictional military logistics target
Major Doug Webster, an attendee of the seminar, said:
“I found the subject matter, the expert presenters and two-day programme incredibly interesting and enjoyable. Having this wider discussion about cyber with an international audience was both excellent and intellectually stimulating.”
The seminar delivered not just an important defence engagement activity but provided those attending with a practical and thought-provoking introduction into the cyber and electromagnetic domain from a UK defence perspective.
The FPDA is a multilateral security pact established in 1971 between the five member nations of Australia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore and the United Kingdom, all Commonwealth countries. The FPDA’s aims are to promote regional security by fostering regional cooperation and providing a framework for consultation in the event of a threat or armed attack.
