Representatives from private sector organisations and businesses across the south-west have visited the Defence Academy, for a day highlighting the necessity of strong defence-industry relationships.
Taking place on Wednesday 17 June, the visit was hosted in partnership with the Wessex Reserve Forces and Cadets’ Association (RFCA) and offered insight into the structure, purpose, and outputs of the Academy.
As employers or sponsors of RFCA personnel, the visitors — who represented 14 different organisations — were able to strengthen their knowledge of the UK armed forces, developing further understanding of the Defence Academy’s role as a world-leading provider of professional defence and security education.

The visit also underscored the vital relationship between defence and employers who support Reservists and Cadet Forces, recognising their contribution to national resilience and operational effectiveness.
Touring key facilities at the Defence College for Military Capability Integration (DCMCI) and the Joint Services Command and Staff College (JSCSC), the programme included insights into the work of DCMCI in advancing capability integration across defence, and an overview of JSCSC’s role in developing future leaders through advanced command and staff education.

Stephen Whitbourn, Regional Employer Engagement Group Chair, said:
“Engagements such as this are essential in strengthening our partnership with industry and ensuring employers gain a deeper appreciation of the skills, leadership and experience that Reservists bring to the workplace. We are grateful to the Defence Academy for hosting such an informative and valuable visit.”
The visit concluded with a discussion session, enabling delegates to reflect on key insights and explore opportunities for continued collaboration.
