Advanced Command and Staff Course Executive Officer

As one of two Canadian exchange officers on the Advanced Command and Staff Course (ACSC), Lieutenant Colonel Rene Laporte, Royal Canadian Air Force, serves as Executive Officer for B Division. He supports the divisional director, directing staff, and course members.

His role spans programme development and delivery, academic facilitation, administration, and personnel support. He is also the lead on contributing to the design and delivery of the Command, Leadership and Management curriculum – the ‘Golden Thread’ of ACSC.

“Through my work on the leadership curriculum, I aim to ensure course members are well-prepared to lead at the operational level.

“Being part of the Defence Academy team means sharing knowledge and experience to enhance the learning environment. I strive to make each course member’s experience a positive one – whether through academic support, family assistance, or simply being a friendly face.”

In addition, Lt Col Laporte leads the ‘Hacking for MOD’ module, delivered in partnership with King’s College London as part of the Defence Innovation MSc. This involves planning, administration, and teaching; helping course members tackle real-world defence challenges through innovation and collaboration.

“Supporting the future leaders of the UK armed forces and our international allies is a privilege. By helping them navigate a demanding course, I hope to contribute to their development as adaptive, empathetic, and creative leaders.”

In his third year at the Joint Services Command and Staff College, Lt Col Laporte previously served as a course-facing member of directing staff. His current role is all about people – anticipating challenges, responding to daily concerns, and being a reliable source of support.

“What I enjoy most is the daily interaction with course members and staff. It’s incredibly rewarding to play even a small part in their journey, both during their time at the Defence Academy and in their future careers.

“It is an absolute honour to be involved with ACSC as an international exchange officer. The opportunity to work alongside colleagues from across the globe adds immeasurable value to the experience – for me and for everyone involved.”
